I want to take a moment as we open Spring 2019 to thank you for being an Urban League supporter. Words can hardly express what an honor it is for me to serve as CEO, during this 66th year. I found tremendous energy and inspiration as I connected with so many of you this past year to reflect on Urban League of San Diego County’s (ULSDC) distinguished history, and establish a vision for the future. This year we are focusing on “Our Children, Our Families, Our Future” initiative.

Possibly one of the proudest moments of the year for me was watching and listening to the honorees and Testimonial of a program participant at the Diversity and Equity – Igniting Women’s Future event held in December. Each of the women honored has contributed to making our community a safe and supportive environment for children and families to thrive. With your support and guidance over the past few years, the ULSDC has built a network of programs serving children and families. From this work and the lessons learned has grown the “Our Children, Our Families, Our Future” initiative with a focus on multi-generational family stability.

I encourage you to take a few minutes to click here and learn more about the “Our Children, Our Families, Our Future” initiative with a KUSI interview clip about financial fitness, April 4, 2019.

Some of ULSDC's children and family programs and accomplishments that I am especially proud of this year include:

  • Golden Pyramid Scholars Program, that will be held this year on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at 2 p.m., at UC San Diego.

  • Collaborating with the Grandparents’ Connection a volunteer group who are working with 200 kinship care parents.

  • Partnering with County of San Diego Health and Human Services to assist at risk youth and families.

  • Breaking ground through our partnership with San Diego City College to offer career and college prep courses in City Heights location for youth,

  • Helping nearly 200 young people prepare for high school and careers, through an array of programs and activities including Project Ready learning enrichment, academic tutoring and more!

  • Partnering with the County of San Diego Sheriff’s Department, to provide psycho-social education services in support of women’s reentry.

We have a fundraising goal of $500,000 for the Our Children, Our Families, Our Future initiative to ensure we can impact 1,000 families by recruiting, training, placing, and coaching 1,000 people in good, high demand jobs.

Your gift of any amount will make a difference. Please join us in empowering San Diego and changing lives.
