Welcome Message

Message from Ray King, President and CEO

JOBS! HOUSING! Educational Training!  Employment and other opportunities for economic empowerment continue to be first in the minds of many as we continue into this year.  Although there have been some gains in available opportunities for the many who currently are in the market for employment, there is still a level of caution on the part of businesses, large and small as they consider expansion of workforce that were downsized in efforts to survive a brutal economy.

The Urban League of San Diego County (ULSDC)  programmatic focus continues to be in the areas of education (youth and adult), economic sustainability (workforce, housing, and financial literacy).  We will give special focus to the “jobs” issue.  Recently, at our Equal Opportunity Day: Diversity Summit and Urban Leaders Under 40 Awards Luncheon, we examined economic forecasts and proposed strategies for job creation.  We hosted a morning political Town Hall session to hear how the current economic environment continues to impact job seekers and employers alike from our political leaders just before the November Elections.  We want to do our part to not only hear from but also serve our constituents in ways that help them to sustain and grow.

Golden Pyramid Scholars Program

The Urban League of San Diego County will celebrate and salute student achievement at the 22nd Annual Golden Pyramid Scholars Program, June 8, 2013, 9:30 a.m.  The 2013 theme is "Education Opens the World" .

As the parent or guardian of a 1st - 12th grade student, you and your child may be aware of the Annual Golden Pyramid Scholars Award Ceremony in which the Urban League honors students for high academic achievement.  We are seeking nominations of students with a Cumulative GPA of 3.0 and above who are African American, African, mixed ethnicity, or part of one the under-represented student populations for this special acknowledgement.  In addition to this invitation, we request that you please nominate other students who meet the same criteria, but did not receive this application from the school or the Urban League.  Feel free to send the application link to other students and/or their families for additional nominees.

Strictly Enforced Application Requirements Include the Following:

  • Middle and High School Students: Must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or greater.
  • Elementary School Students: Must have above average in math, science, language arts, citizenship, and attendance.
  • Note: A Cumulative Grade Point Average is a calculation of the average of all of a student's grades for all semesters and courses completed up to a given academic term, whereas the GPA may only refer to one term.

Student applications are now available on-line by using the following link:
